SUMMARY:Future Treescapes 24
DESCRIPTION:Unlocking the Future of UK Treescapes\n11th – 13th June 2024\, Glasgow University Union & Online\nJoin us at Future Treescapes 24\, our final conference and a celebration of the ground-breaking achievements and outputs of the UK Treescapes Programme. \nBetween the government’s target to plant 30\,000 hectares of trees a year over the next 30 years and experts’ calls for a refocus on tree establishment and resilience\, it is clear there is still a lot of knowledge that needs to be unlocked. \nThis dynamic conference brings together researchers\, stakeholders\, policymakers and woodland enthusiasts to reveal what the latest research can contribute to our trees\, woodlands and forests. \nIt is your opportunity to collaborate with Treescapes’ researchers to open up current knowledge and help translate it into practice. At the conference\, attendees will be able to explore the tools and methodologies coming out of the programme\, shape the potential future of our treescapes and debate the future needs of research and policy in this space.

SUMMARY:Performance on MEMBRA Sonification
DESCRIPTION:In Autumn 2023 at MEMBRA Creative Lab 2 conversations amongst project members took place about the possible ways how one might represent epigenetic changes in SOUND. Team members Joe He and Marco Catoni vowed to follow this up…… and met with Dr Scott Wilson\, who is a member of faculty in Birmingham in the Department of Music. In an ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLE coincidence Scott was looking for a topic to guide a composition that looked at the idea of memory. This was a perfect match so Joe shared epigenetic data with Scott\, who then transposed this into a composition. \nThe result of the collaboration will take place at a free concert given by the Ligeti Quartet at the Elgar Concert Hall on University of Birmingham campus. \n\nhttps://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/lcahm/departments/music/events/2024/spring-24/08mar-memory-project-ligeti-quartet.aspx \nCrossCurrents: The Memory Project – Ligeti Quartet\nThe ever-exuberant Ligeti Quartet brings to life this project exploring the kaleidoscopic idea of memory\, in collaboration with composers based in the UK and Colombia. \nThis wide-ranging programme explores themes from the history of Colombia\, through the changed cultural landscape of Kazimierz – the old Jewish district of Kraków\, to sonifications of the epigenetic memory of trees. Featuring the world premieres of works by Natalia Valencia\, Daria Kwiatkowska\, Jorge Garcia\, Santiago Lozano\, Sara Caneva\, and Scott Wilson.

SUMMARY:TimberFest 2023
DESCRIPTION:MEMBRA are delighted to be participating at Timberfest\, which is hosted at one of our partner organisation’s ‘The National Forest‘. \nTimberfest is July 7-9 2023: https://timberfestival.org.uk/ \nMEMBRA will premier ‘Ring of Truth’\, which is a creative collaboration led by Lucy Neal from the Walking Forest. \n‘Please be upstanding – the court is about to commence.’ \nAn old tree of the forest will shortly give evidence. But who’s in the dock? And what’s the crime? Three scientists prepare their case: tree ring samples tell the story of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. What harm has come to the forest? Join the proceedings; be judge and jury. Decide for yourself what wrong’s been committed by whom and what can be done to put things right. Proceedings will be heralded with a procession to and from the court. \nhttps://timberfestival.org.uk/2023-programme/ring-of-truth/ \n \n

SUMMARY:Future Treescapes 2022
DESCRIPTION:Future Treescapes 2022\nGrowing the evidence for treescape expansion\n9:30am – 4:30pm\, 22 June 2022\nFREE EVENT\nFuture Treescapes 22 is the first conference being led by the Future of UK Treescapes Programme. \nComing years are likely to see one of the most dramatic increases in tree cover and forest planting in the UK for generations. Government commitments to net-zero and nature recovery mean that significant investment in tree planting and woodland expansion will have profound impacts on our country’s landscape\, biodiversity and culture. However\, questions remain about how best to do this in order to gain the most benefit – not only for the environment but for society as a whole. \nThe Future of UK Treescapes is a £14.5 million programme of research and activities that will help inform the critical decisions that will be made in coming years around the ‘what\, where\, how and who’ of treescape expansion. In addition\, they will help us to better safeguard our trees\, woods and forests. \nMORE INFORMATION HERE.

SUMMARY:UK Treescapes Launch Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the UK Treescapes Programme and hear firsthand from those making decisions about our trees and planting our new forests\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThe UK Treescapes Launch is a unique half-day event being led by the Ambassadors of the Future of UK Treescapes Programme\, to ignite conversations around our woods\, forests and treescapes. \nOur trees help us tackle climate change\, support animal life and benefit our well-being and culture. Yet our trees are also under threat from climate change\, disease and demand for land. And unfortunately\, this has led to decades of loss in animal and plant life\, environmental quality and cultural heritage. \nIn the light of COP26’s promise to end deforestation by 2030\, and the UK Government’s plans to drastically increase tree cover in the UK over the coming years\, we must urgently start answering how we will achieve these goals. \nOur programme is helping find answers to many of these questions\, but we must do so with a focus on supporting those who will be making the decisions and planting our new forests\, and those who are most affected by the changes \nWhat will happen on the day?\nThis event will: \n\nIntroduce UK Treescapes’ current portfolio of projects\nProvide a platform for the programme’s stakeholders to discuss their priorities and hopes for the future\nAnd bring together all those with an interest in the programme\, from researchers to artists\, policymakers to community groups.\n\nWho should attend?\nThis conference is for anyone carrying out research on forestry\, woodlands and trees; for those managing woods and trees; and for those interested in being part of the dynamic community across the UK interested in protecting and regenerating our treescapes. \nPlease note this event will be hosted online and may be recorded and made available for those who cannot attend.
